Wiener Staatsballet performing at Tampere Hall June 14th
March 4th 2015
The celebrated Wiener Staatsballett (Vienna State Ballet) directed by Manuel Legris will be visiting Tampere Hall this June. The ballet company’s Finnish premiere features a ballet gala with 27 dancers and the company’s first soloist, the talented Ms Olga Esina. Ticket sales start Wednesday, 4 March 2015.
In Tampere Hall’s Main Auditorium, the Vienna State Ballet will perform highlights from the most beautiful and interesting works of classical and modern ballet, for example Swan Lake, Le Corsaire, Balanchine's Allegro Brillante and David Dawson's A Million Kisses to My Skin. The dancers will include the company’s top soloists.
Formerly a celebrated ballet dancer himself, Manuel Legris (b. 1964) has directed the Vienna State Ballet since September 2010, bringing the company to new heights. Mr Legris designs the ballet company's repertoire with a vision and determination and also involves the company's promising young dancers in the choreography work. Under the directorship of Mr Legris, the Vienna State Ballet has already performed in Versailles, Monte Carlo, Belgrade, Paris, Japan and Oman.
Prior to joining the Vienna State Ballet, Mr Legris had a stellar career in the Paris Opera Ballet, where he performed under the directorship of, among others, Rudolf Nureyev, who appointed Mr Legris as the Paris Opera Ballet star dancer (Danseur Étoile) in 1986. Mr Legris concluded his dancing career in an official farewell performance in Paris in May 2009. He is an acclaimed artist who has performed leading roles in well-loved classics and contemporary works as well as in numerous premieres around the world. He has worked together with some of the world's most famous ballet companies during his career, also in Vienna. Mr Legris’s distinguished career is reflected in the list of choreographers he has worked with: George Balanchine, Trisha Brown, Mats Ek, Mihail Fokin, William Forsythe, Pierre Lacotte, John Neumeier, Rudolf Nureyev, Roland Petit, Jerome Robbins and Twyla Tharp.
Mr Legris has also received numerous honours and prizes in recognition of his talent: first prize in the ballet competition in Osaka (1984), Prix Nijinsky (1988), Prix Benois de la Danse (1998) Nijinski Award (“Best Dancer in the World, 2000”), Prix Léonide Massine (2001); Chevalier des Arts et Lettres (1993), Officier des Arts et Lettres (1998), Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite (2002), Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur (2006) and Commandeur des Arts et Lettres (2009).
The star of the Vienna State Ballet’s performance in the Tampere Hall will be the Russian-born Ms Olga Esina (b. 1986), who has danced in Vienna since 2006. She was appointed first solo dancer in 2010. Before joining the Vienna State Ballet, Ms Esina danced with the Mariinsky Ballet company, where she dazzled in classical and other types of leading roles. Ms Esina studied at the Vaganova Ballet Academy.
Tampere Hall’s ballet gala will feature a video wall for introducing the works and the ballet company to the audience. Before the gala, audience members are invited to take part in an open and free discussion organised by Tampere Hall, at which Mr Legris will be interviewed by Tampere Hall's CEO Ms Paulina Ahokas.
